Dr. Walking Dead here--
ReplyDeleteGreat episode and great discussion! I had many, MANY thoughts as I was listening to the show.
First off, let's remember that genre mostly exists as a marketing tool. Folks have certain "horizons of expectations," and they will be drawn to the kinds of films they know they already enjoy. Too many people get antsy if not prudish when it comes to "horror," so "thriller" can market films to another audience (even though the two genres are very similar and have substantial "Venn diagram-like" crossover.
I think your definitions at the beginning of the show are spot on. "Thriller" to me evokes "terror," which is all about anticipation, suspense, and above all DREAD. "Horror" is all about gore, abjections, and DISGUST. The former focuses on what MIGHT happen; the latter, on what HAS happened.
It's all a spectrum, of course (subjective, as came up again and again in the show). I think we could go so far as to think of "thriller" (like Rear Window), "thriller-horror" (like Silence of the Lambs), "horror-thriller" (like Se7en), and "horror" (like Alien). But it's all in the eye of the beholder. At the end of the day, a great movie is a great movie! :D
This comment is real gold, guys. Pay attention to it; read it through again.
DeleteA real quote to think about:
". . .let's remember that genre mostly exists as a marketing tool."
Dr Walking Dead!!! Thanks so much for listening to the episode. Glad you enjoyed the show. You are absolutely correct in your thoughts here. Marketing Tool is the key for sure. Academy awards etc and that society I still believe is a reasoning behind the Thriller genre. Thank You so much for your amazing response!!
DeleteDr Walking Dead again (I can’t figure out how to post with my Google account!). Thanks for the kind words, fellas.
ReplyDeleteDid someone on this episode talk about Terrified (2017)? I’ve been listening to a lot of shows of late and have gotten confused. :D Well, thanks to WHOMEVER recommended it—I loved it! VERY scary and kinda bizarre. Great pick!
